Local foods to try in Italy

If you want to experience the culture of a place, it is said that you need to explore the local cuisine of your destination. Food brings everyone together, and there is nothing quite like exploring a country while also enjoying its cuisine.

If you are travelling to a new country, the best way to explore the country and get to know the locals is through food. Italy is the same. You want to learn the culture of this beautiful country, understand the food. Italian food is heaven!

Italy is a splendid travel destination for a wide variety of reasons. One such reason is the food of the Italians. Italian cuisine is one of a kind and something almost anyone can fall in love with. Italian food is known all around the world. And there is no doubt that if you are interested in travelling to Italy, you would want to get your hands on all the delicious dishes like an authentic Italian pizza.

The fun part is that there is much more to Italian cuisine than just pizza. Of course, good authentic Italian pizza is crucial for anyone planning a trip to Italy. However, you can’t miss trying out the other mouth-watering Italian dishes of this splendid country.

Pizza

pizza

Any conversation about Italian cuisine is incomplete without the mention of pizza. Pizza is among the most liked foods around the world. I, personally love it. It’s my comfort food and I’m sure it is for many. And thus, if you do visit Italy, then your trip will be incomplete without experiencing true authentic Italian pizza.

Of course, many countries have Italian restaurants that claim to serve authentic Italian pizzas – London does too! But you won’t want to miss the experience of having a slice of Italian pizza in an Italian town surrounded by scenery that will stay in your memory for a lifetime.

The authentic experience of the food of Italy can only be understood when you are there in the country. Among the local foods to try in Italy, pizza is probably something everyone should get. It is the ultimate comfort food for the soul and getting one that is Italian would be a dream come true.

Carbonara

Carbonara pasta

Other than pizza, another dish that comes to mind when you think of Italian cuisine is pasta. Pasta is another comfort food that you cannot miss out on when you travel to Italy.

Italian pasta is famous all around the world. You will have a wide variety to choose from, and my suggestion would be to try out as much pasta as you can handle.

While there are many pasta dishes that you can try, one of them that you should have is with Carbonara. This wonderful dish originated in Rome. Several great pasta dishes emerged from Rome, but one pasta dish that reached the pinnacle of fame is Carbonara.

A trip to Rome would be incomplete without getting your hands on some authentic carbonara pasta.

Carbonara is made with eggs, pancetta, and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. You can have it with guanciale (pork cheek) or with simple black pepper seasoning if you don’t eat pork.

Lasagne

Lasagne

Another dish from the Italian cuisine that is famous all over the world is lasagne. Lasagne is one of the most delicious dishes you can try on your visit to Italy.

A lasagne comes with sheets of egg pasta, and the layers have a variety of toppings. Several places in Italy are famous for their lasagne. But nothing quite like the fame of Emilia Romagna.

Emilia Romagna is one of the best places to explore if you want to experience Italian cuisine to its depth. This city is the heart of splendid lasagne that will leave you wanting more.

Risotto

Risotto

If you are a fan of rice, then risotto should be on the top of your list for local foods to try in Italy. Risotto is a creamy rice dish that will take you to the northern areas of Italy with every bite you take.

Risotto is arborio rice, cheese, and chicken, beef, or vegetable stock pasta dish. Few restaurants make it with a little bit of white wine, while others do not.

There are many places where you can experience the delicious taste of risotto. The restaurants in Milan are specially to try out if you want to try out this dish.

Truffles

Truffles

Truffles are a hit or miss for anyone who tries them. They have a uniquely pungent flavour which is loved by some and hated by others. There is no in-between when it comes to truffles.

If you are someone who has never had truffles before, then your trip to Italy should be the best spot to get indulged into them. Many pasta dishes come with truffles as a garnish. You can get a taste of them before you try out more dishes with truffles.

Cannoli

Cannoli

Italy might be famous for its savoury dishes, but the Italian desserts are not too far behind.

One such dessert that you must try on your visit to Italy is fresh cannoli. Cannoli is a pastry of fried dough filled with ricotta cheese and mascarpone mixture. You can also have it in several other varieties, such as chocolate or candied fruits.

If you happen to visit Sicily on your trip to Italy, then you should try out the cannoli over there.

Tiramisu

Tiramisu

An Italian dessert you will find pretty much all over Italy, and in any Italian restaurant worldwide is Tiramisu. It is one of the most common and widely enjoyed desserts in the country. It is one of my personal favourites.

The preparation of this dessert requires cocoa, egg yolks, ladyfinger cookies, mascarpone cheese, espresso, and sugar.

While this dessert is available all over Italy, there is nothing quite like visiting the place of its origin and trying it out over there. The very first place that made this splendid dessert is Treviso, and the restaurant is called Le Beccherie.

Gelato

Gelato

If you are a fan of ice cream (can’t imagine anyone not liking ice cream), you need to try gelato on your visit to Italy.

While gelato is a little different from ice cream, it will give you a similar feel, nonetheless. Although, I have tried Gelato from two of the Amorino’s from Verona, and their branch in London. However, I’d say there is a tiny bit of difference in the flavour. You cannot beat the origin.

The difference between gelato and ice cream is that ice cream is mostly cream and milk, whereas gelato is mostly milk or simply just milk.

Gelato is a delicious dessert that you can find pretty much everywhere in Italy so, make sure you don’t miss out on this mouth-watering treat on your trip.

Food is something that brings everyone together. One of the best ways to get the perfect experience of a country is by exploring the food of the said place.

Italy is a country which is famous for several things. One such thing is the cuisine of the Italians. Your trip to Italy will be incomplete if you do not take the time out to explore all the delicious dishes from the country. I cannot wait to plan another trip, just for food!
